George Square Hotels

Glasgow’s principal civic square, George Square dates from 1781 and is named after King George III. It is the work of the famous 18th century architects James and Robert Adam. Glasgow Queen Street Station lies to the north of the square and Glasgow City Chambers dominates the east side. The centrepiece of George Square is an 80-foot high column crowned by a statue of the novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott. Other statues situated around the square include representations of Lord Clyde, poets Robert Burns and Thomas Campbell, inventor James Watt and chemist Thomas Graham, which combine to emphasise Scottish ingenuity down the ages.

Once the second city of the British Empire, Glasgow has spent the last 20 years shaking off its former image of post-industrial decline. Today, with its handsome but soot-stained Victorian architecture cleaned up and major new developments along the Clyde, it’s a vibrant modern city, acclaimed for its friendliness, clubs, exciting music scene, impressive art galleries and some of the best brand-name shopping in Europe.
