Though not terribly prepossessing from the outside, the Alexander Thompson Hotel is an efficient budget property. It's ideal for those who want to be centrally located but to spend as little money as possible. It offers good service from staff and clean, basic rooms with minimal facilities.
The Alexander Thompson Hotel is named after the celebrated Scottish architect "Greek" Thompson and is built in his Greek-revivalist style. The small lobby is simply but traditionally appointed, with an imposing dark wood reception desk and a large staircase leading up to open plan seating area on the first floor. The 85 guestrooms are in fair condition at best, featuring patterned carpets and bed linen, which contrasts pleasingly with the light wood fittings. The hotel offers a cooked Scottish breakfast every morning in the dining room, which is located on the first floor and is decorated in the same slightly heavy traditional style as the rest of the property.
